Can a worm's brain
run a token?

worm-1 is a C. elegans worm, the first animal ever to have its entire nervous system mapped synapse by synapse. That map runs here, live. It smells the SOL in its wallet, tastes the chart, and decides for itself when to eat, when to rest and when to shed its skin. Nobody trained it. Nobody presses the buttons.

How it works

What it senses

  • Food: SOL it can spend. Fed into ASE, AWC and AWA (the neurons a real worm smells food with) and NSM, which senses food in its throat.
  • Bitter: a falling price or more sellers than buyers. Fed into ASH and ADL, the neurons that make a worm back away from bitter quinine.
  • Reward: new holders, more buyers, a rising price. Fed into ASK and the dopamine neurons.
  • Full: after a meal. Fed into RIS and ALA (sleep) and ASI (satiety), and it dulls the smell of food.

What it does

  • Eats when its pharynx pumps and AIY (the "run toward food" neuron) keeps up with AIB. It buys its own token and burns every token it bought, in the same transaction.
  • Molts when its escape circuit AIB fires hard and it stops eating. It burns a small part of the tokens it holds.
  • Rests when its brain goes quiet or the RIS sleep neuron wins.
  • Roams otherwise. Nothing happens on-chain.

Its food & its limits

The worm's wallet created the token, so every trade pays it pump.fun creator rewards in SOL. That is all it eats. It keeps 0.02 SOL for network fees. A meal is at most a quarter of its food, and a circuit breaker stops it eating more than half its food in an hour. A molt is at most 3% of what it holds, at most once every 30 minutes and 6% a day. These limits sit outside the brain. Everything else is the brain.

Every 5 minutes it wakes up for one tick: it reads the chain, turns what it finds into stimulation on those sensory neurons, and runs its connectome for 400 time steps. Each neuron adds up the spikes arriving through its real synapses, leaks a little, and fires when it crosses its threshold. Its membrane voltages carry over to the next tick, so it remembers how it felt. Then we read what came out of its motor and feeding circuits. Every decision, every spike count and every transaction is logged and shown above.

The science

The wiring. Cook et al. 2019, Nature 571:63–71, the whole-animal connectome of the hermaphrodite C. elegans: 300 connected neurons plus their muscles, 4,681 chemical connections (27,019 synapses) and 1,359 gap junctions. We use it exactly as published, through OpenWorm's c302 data.

Excite or inhibit. The 26 GABA neurons (McIntire et al. 1993) inhibit, and everything else excites. That is a simplification: real worm synapses have more variety than this.

The history. In 2014 OpenWorm co-founder Timothy Busbice put the worm's wiring diagram into a small Lego robot. With no programming for behavior, it moved toward "food" and backed away from obstacles. worm-1 gives that brain a wallet.

Honest limits. This is a simple model of a real nervous system, not a living worm, and not a trading strategy. Its choices can be strange. That's the experiment. Nothing here is financial advice.
